about

I was a writer-in-residence in the Trimdons, County Durham, in 1988. I worked on a small-scale touring show which was based on the life of retired miner John Egan who worked at Trimdon Grange pit for around 50 years. His pit-pony was called 'Spring', an evocative name for any resident-poet!

(Keith Armstrong - original liner notes)

lyrics

‘SPRING’: PIT PONY

"The first pony I got was a grand little feller
They called him ‘Spring’
I always remember Spring
I can see him now
Spring, he was grey
All the ponies had names
Before they came down the pit
Boxer, Whiskey, Mottram, Martin
All sorts of names
But my pony was ‘Spring’"
(From an interview with John Egan)

You are an underground spring
No flowers grow here
No sunshine glows
You are an underground spring

You’re a dark horse in a dark place
Your back’s bruised with coal
Yet you have dreams
You too have dreams

Spring into the fields
Spring across the grass
Spring with the children
Hear them sing!

‘Spring’ the pony
Spring the trap
Trapper-lad
Spring the trap

You are an underground spring
No flowers grow here
No sunshine glows
You are an underground spring

You’re a dark horse in a dark place
Your back’s bruised with coal
Yet you have dreams
You too have dreams

Spring into the fields
Spring across the grass
Spring with the children
Hear them sing!

‘Spring’ the pony
Spring the trap
Trapper-lad
Spring the trap

Spring into the fields
Spring across the grass
Spring with the children
Hear them sing!

‘Spring’ the pony
Spring the trap
Trapper-lad
Spring the trap
